measuring up

A good bath design depends on accurate measurements. First, decide on what you need, what you want, and what you'd like to keep and incorporate in your new bathroom. Then, help organize your thoughts and make it easier for others to understand your ideas by drawing a preliminary room outline and floor plan. They don't have to be works of art, just clear overhead sketches of your existing bathroom.

NOTE: ALL MEASUREMENTS SHOULD BE IN INCHES

Important things to include in the drawing:
  • The outline and dimensions of the room.
  • Placement and size of doors and windows.
  • The wall that is currently plumbed for the tub or shower.
  • Placement of outlets, switches, and lighting fixtures.
  • The distance from the centerline of the toilet to the nearest side wall.
  • The distance from the centerline of the sink or sinks to the nearest side wall.
  • Placement of existing vent fan or heat ducts.
  • Ceiling height

What's missing? A few items have been added in red. Windows require 4 measurements, the width, the height, the distance from one wall, and the height off the floor.

You may be making up your own symbols to show different items. I've added the words "light bar" and "heat vent". It's fine to make up your own symbols, just label them.

The hallway closet is included in the drawing because maybe you might want to incorporate it into the new bathroom.

Notice that the ceiling height is missing.

example 2

What's missing? A few items have been added in red. Windows require 4 measurements, the width, the height, the distance from one wall, and the height off the floor.

The centerline for the sink is missing. But I don't really need it. The 36" vanity is tucked up against the wall.

Are my crazy light symbols sconces or a light bar? I don't know either. Just give them a label.

My heat vent symbol on the front of the vanity is attempting to show a heat vent coming out from the toe kick of the cabinet. It would probably be best to include a short note attached to the symbol.

Ceiling height was missing again. Added in red.
